CHECK YOUR DECK!
Is your deck safe? Or perhaps it no longer looks its best and is just looking tired?
It’s that time of year again and in the interests of safety, we have put together a few pointers to look out for on your existing deck or for a future deck project you may be planning. Winter time is the best time to get all these problems sorted out before they become very expensive repairs or at worse, major disasters.
Protect yourself, your friends or even your customers!
SPLIT OR DECAYING BOARDS
Check all over the deck to ensure the deck boards are still sound – look underneath as well as support posts and beams for any signs of damp or decay. Stick a screw driver into any areas you are worried about to make sure the wood is still sound.
Watch out for insect holes or small piles of fresh wood flour – the dreaded wood borer may be around.
A bad deck is a possible safety hazard!
LOOSE OR RUSTED FASTENERS
Tighten any loose screws or install longer screws if you see deck boards have come loose and are popping up.
The deck should feel solid, the steps not sagging or sway or move.
RAILING OR BALUSTRADES
These must be secure – push on them to make sure they are secure. Is the railing high enough to prevent anyone falling; is the gap between rails no more than 100mm to prevent children getting through? Very important if your deck is high off the ground!
CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE
Clean away dirt and leaves regularly, especially between deckboards. Make sure that no areas are showing signs of mould or damp – these are prone to early rot.
Clear away surrounding trees and branches to make sure they cannot fall onto the deck
Once your deck is clean, give it a coat of oil to keep it looking good and help protect it through winter in readiness for summer.
LIGHTING AND ELECTRICAL
Make sure all lights are working, clean the covers; make sure solar panels are clean if fitted. Check all connections and plugs are safe.
OUTDOOR FURNITURE
Make sure it is clean, safe and sturdy. If not being used for winter, put it into storage to protect it further after completing any maintenance required.
If you don’t want to do all this yourself, we offer a FREE deck inspection and will carry out this maintenance for you at very reasonable rates.
